How One Ecommerce Brand Grew Online Sales by 106% in 30 Days — Running Meta Ads and GEO Together

Before diving into the numbers: GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — the practice of structuring your website content and online presence so that AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI cite your business when answering questions in your category. Unlike SEO, which targets rankings in Google’s search results, GEO targets inclusion in the AI-generated answer itself. For ecommerce businesses running paid ads, it addresses the part of the buying journey that happens after someone sees your ad — when they search AI to decide whether your brand is actually the right choice.

Most ecommerce businesses running Meta ads think about growth the same way: if results plateau, increase the budget. Spend more to reach more people. It’s a reasonable instinct — and it works, up to a point.

This is the story of what happens when you look at the full picture instead.

The Starting Point — A Business With a Hidden Opportunity

The client was an ecommerce brand in a competitive market, already running Meta ads consistently. Results were solid but had hit a ceiling. The obvious move was to increase ad spend. Instead, we did something more useful first: we looked at where the revenue was actually coming from.

What we found was surprising.

The client was spending 100% of their advertising budget on Meta — Facebook and Instagram. But when we pulled the analytics, Meta was only responsible for around 60% of total revenue. The remaining 30–40% was coming from organic Google search and AI citation. For free. Without any deliberate effort or investment in either channel.

That changes the framing entirely. The question stopped being “how do we spend more on ads” and became “if 40% of revenue is already coming from free channels we haven’t optimised — what happens if we actually do?”

The Strategy — Two Angles, One Product at a Time

Rather than trying to build GEO presence across the entire catalogue, we focused on one product: the bestselling product in the range. The one with the most demand, the most attention, and the clearest opportunity to establish a strong AI citation position quickly.

From there, the strategy worked on two specific angles simultaneously.

Angle 1 — Own the intent around your own brand.

When someone sees a Meta ad for a product they’re interested in, a significant portion of them don’t buy immediately. They go to AI — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI — and ask whether this brand is actually the best option in the category. In a competitive market where multiple brands are selling similar products, that AI response is often what determines whether they come back to buy or choose a competitor instead.

If AI doesn’t recommend you, the ad spend that created that interest is working for your competitors, not for you.

The first priority was making sure that when anyone searched for this brand or product in AI, the answer was clearly and consistently positive. Owning the sentiment and the citation — so the AI response reinforced the impression the ads had already created.

Angle 2 — Become the recommended alternative to competitors.

The second angle targeted competitor brand queries. When someone searches for a competitor product in AI and asks for alternatives or comparisons, we wanted this client’s product to be what comes back. Not by attacking the competitor, but by building enough structured, specific content around the product that AI naturally surfaces it alongside — and sometimes instead of — the brands people were already searching for.

The Content Structure

To support both angles, we built in two layers.

The first layer was pillar content — six to ten foundational pieces covering the brand, the product, its features, and the specific reasons it stands out in the category. These aren’t blog posts in the traditional sense. They’re structured, schema-tagged pages designed to give AI engines a complete, extractable picture of the product before a single supporting piece is published. The foundation has to be right before anything else compounds on top of it.

The second layer was supporting content — pieces that reinforced the pillar content’s authority and simultaneously addressed the competitor angle. When someone searches a competitor brand, these pieces create the pathway for this client’s product to appear alongside.

One product. Two angles. Two content layers. Published and indexed inside 30 days.

The Result — 106% Increase in Online Sales in One Month

Within the first 30 days of the GEO programme, online sales increased by 106%.

The Meta ads didn’t change. The ad budget didn’t increase. The product didn’t change. What changed was that the 40% of the conversion journey happening outside Meta — in AI search, in organic Google, in the moments between seeing an ad and making a decision — was now working with the ads instead of being left to chance.

The Offline Effect Nobody Expected

The online sales number is the headline. But what the client reported alongside it was arguably more significant for understanding what GEO actually does.

Before the GEO programme, roughly 20–30% of people who visited the client’s physical showroom arrived already having made a purchase decision. They had researched the product, decided they wanted it, and came in to complete the purchase. The remaining 70–80% were still undecided.

After 30 days of GEO, that ratio had inverted. Now 60–70% of showroom visitors were arriving pre-sold. They had researched the product through AI and organic search before coming in, formed a clear preference, and were visiting primarily to see and try the product before completing a purchase they had already mentally committed to.

The showroom conversion rate increased dramatically — not because anything about the showroom changed, but because AI was doing the pre-selling before people walked through the door.

This is what GEO actually does at a deeper level than the click and revenue metrics show. It shapes what potential customers believe about your brand before they interact with you directly — whether that is on your website, in your store, or on a call.

What Made This Work — and What It Requires

A few things were true about this situation that made the results achievable in 30 days.

The brand already had a foundation. Years of running Meta ads had built genuine brand recognition, customer reviews, and some existing organic presence. GEO didn’t create brand authority from nothing — it structured and amplified what was already there.

The content was built strategically, not at volume. GEO content isn’t the same as YouTube content or social media content. Publishing the same angle repeatedly creates cannibalisation problems — Google and AI treat it as spam rather than authority. Every piece had a specific role: pillar or supporting, brand-owned or competitor-adjacent. Strategy before volume.

The technical foundation was right. Schema markup, proper indexing, AI crawler access — the infrastructure that lets AI engines actually read and extract the content. Without this, even well-written content doesn’t get cited reliably.

The timing mattered. In competitive markets, being the first brand to establish strong AI citation in a category creates a compounding advantage that becomes progressively harder for competitors to displace. This client moved early.

What This Means If You’re Running Meta Ads

If you’re spending on Meta ads and not actively managing your GEO presence, a portion of the demand your ads create is resolving in competitors’ favour — in the AI queries that happen between the ad and the purchase decision.

The question worth asking is the same one we asked at the start of this engagement: how much of your revenue is already coming from free organic and AI channels you haven’t optimised? And what would happen if you did?

For this client, the answer was 106% growth in 30 days.
